General
There are two types of cookies that are used for different things - known as persistent cookies and session cookies. A persistent cookie saves a text file on the user's computer. This file stays on the computer between the user's browsing sessions to the site. This file can be read and written by the same website on several different occasions. A possible application for a permanent cookie can be personalized settings on the site that are to be kept for a long time.
A session cookie is created during a visit to the site and is stored in the computer's memory as long as the browser is running. An application for a session cookie is to control access to information on the site. This may be to allow a logged on user pages access based on a user's identity and to give permission to edit pages. It may also be to keep track of the same users as they go through different steps in a flow, eg a multi-part forms.
Cookies on our site
We use session cookies to identify logged on users in order to give accurate access. In the case of the usual anonymous user the visitor can easily turn off cookies in their browser.
If an administrator of our site log in to edit / update pages cookies are users for the system to know that it´s the same user who clicks (navigation) between the sides.
