Tourism and events

Piteå is in Norrbotten in Swedish Lapland, a place of contrasts. Light and darkness, warmth and cold, the mountains and the archipelago. Sweden's highest water temperatures are often recorded at Pite Havsbad on the Nordic Riviera - hard to believe it you heard the ice crunching against the hull of an ice breaker a few months earlier. The sea ice if the Gulf of Bothnia also serves as an arena for skating, dog sledding and snow mobile safaris.

Northern light & Midnight Sun
Get a ring-side seat for the world-famous light phenomen of the aurora borealis. See the northern lights dance across the dark winter sky, reflected against the white snow, or be enchanted by the long, light summer nights from May to August.

Piteå is packed with things to do for all tastes and ages. We've got major annual events attracting hundreds of visitors, but also smaller local events such as barn dances, a range of concerts, open-air theatre and the city's popular second-hand markets.

Young footballers from all around the world come to the Piteå Summer Games every year. The Midnight Sun International drag race attracts thousands of motoring enthusiasts every year. Year after year the Piteå Dansar och Ler street festival sees the city centre filled with cheerful people with major artists performing on the various stages. Every other year Piteå also hosts Stora Nolia - the biggest trade fair in Sweden, sith 120 000 visitors and over 800 exhibitors. Spa on ice, skating competitions, dog sledding and snow mobile excursions are just some of the activities on offer in Piteå Winter Week.

Friendly and relaxed shopping, socialise as you shop - that's the best way of describing the Piteå shopping experience. Our shops are packed with the latest fashions and excellent offers. The Back City shopping centre is expanding its range and Piteå is growing as a retail destination all the time. If you'd rather head out into the countryside, you'll find farm- and country shops to discover. In Piteå there is also a wide range of crafts and culture, meet the artists face to face or step back to the 19th century at Swensbylijda open-air museum. Sounds like fun?

We've got the capacity to host large conferences and events. Over the years a number of national organisations and major foreign companies have chosen to hold their annual general meetings and congresses with us. So whether there are 150 of you or 1 500, we'll be happy to organize your conference for you.

Getting here is easy. It's an hour's flight from Stockholm Arlanda to Luleå airport. From Luleå airport it's 50 km to Piteå city centre. Or why not come by train or bus. If you'd like to explore further afield, there are hire cars at the airport and in the centre of Piteå.
