Swedish for Immigrants, SFI, is a basic education in the Swedish language for adults with a native tounge other than Swedish.
All immigrants from age 16 without basic skills in the Swedish language, who are registered in the municipality, are entitled to participate in SFI.
If you are under 20, you are primarily referred to the language introduction program of the upper secondary school (Strömbackaskolan).
SFI studies are free of charge and can be combined with other courses or a part-time job. SFI studies do not qualify for student aid.
Courses
- SFI A or SFI B if you have little or no former education.
- SFI B, SFI C and SFI D if you have a longer education.
After each completed course you get a certificate.
Schedule
Day time
Daytime is full time studies and include 15 hours of class per week, Monday through Friday.
You will have morning classes 2-3 days a week , and afternoon class remaining days.
Morning classes are from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
Afternoon classes are from 12:15 PM to 3:30 PM.
Distance/Evenings
For those who work and are used to studies, there are distance classes.
Distance studies require a level of Swedish corresponding to SFI course B.

Submit your SFI-application to Vuxenutbildningen (Adult education) with online application
E-mail adress and Swedish personal number are required for online application.

Are you an EU/ EEA citizen or a citizen of Switzerland with right of residence and domiciled in Piteå, but not registered in the municipality? Then you must leave your application on paper form. Contact a guidance counselor (studie- och yrkesvägledare) at Vuxenutbildningen. You must attach a copy of your passport and documents proving the right of residence.

Swedish as a second language
SFI has different levels and an individual study pace. After finishing SFI you can continue study Swedish as a second language at a basic level, and then continue study at a upper secondary level. You can combine your studies in swedish with other courses.
