"Åkerbär"
Take a walk in central Piteå and contemplate Piteå's fine murals.
In May 2023, Piteå's art festival OGJORT was held. This year's theme was murals and four artists have painted four different walls in central Piteå.
Mona Caron - Lillbrogatan 12
Mona Caron is a Swiss artist who became a muralist in her current hometown of San Francisco, California. She is best known for her murals that celebrate the rebellious resilience of weeds. Around 2006, Mona began working with an activity she called "phytograffiti", and in 2010-12 she created a series of animated murals with stop motion of wild plants growing through the sidewalk. Her video "Weeds" (meaning weeds) received wide international distribution, showing gigantic murals of small plants that sneak up and then take up space. These large-scale, symbolic, site-specific botanical murals form Mona's growing "urban macroherbarium" and have been featured on BBC News, Al Jazeera, PRI, among others
Mona says that her inspiration comes from nature. She says that with Weeds, they may be small but they break through concrete. They are everywhere and yet invisible. And the more they are trampled on, the stronger they grow back. Inspiration that nature wins in the end!
Ahead of the work during Ogjort2023, Mona has been in contact with a Swedish biologist to learn more about the flora of northern Sweden. We look forward to seeing what grows!
