The Åby River forms the boundary between Västerbotten and Norrbotten. It is a small forest river where the lower stretches are steeper than any other river in northern Sweden, offering anglers a large number of pleasant currents and rapids.

The Åby River is a very rapid-filled forest river. In its lower course, it is steeper than any other river in northern Sweden. Large parts of the river valley have a wilderness character, and it is only at Klubbfors that cultivated land appears. Here, the river is accessible from the main road.

The river is regulated. A hydropower station is located in Hednäs, where a fish passage has recently been completed. No salmon have been stocked, except for a small release of fry in the 1950s, which means that the salmon population is more original than those in other rivers in the area.

Salmon fishing takes place along almost the entire stretch from Hednäs to the river mouth. The salmon run early and are usually fished from late May to September, with a peak around Midsummer.

Large parts of the river are included in fishery management areas.
