But then conductor, composer and arranger Örjan Fahlström took over the leadership and the early 80s came to be the time for Norrbotten Big Band's turnaround.
Now challenging music was written for the orchestra, a strict rehearsal schedule was established, pressure was put on the musicians for presence and delivery at a high level. And suddenly a powerful big band arose that put Norrland on Sweden's music map!
- It was an extremely rewarding time. I saw great potential in the orchestra with so many young musicians and promising soloists hungry for new music. Later we moved to Luleå and had the chance to meet a larger audience. There we ended up in the same premises as the Norrbottensteatern and a fantastic time ensued, says Örjan Fahlström.
The band continued to be successful and the next man on the desk was the American trumpeter Tim Hagans. The year was 1996 and the world opened up to the band. Now tours were organized in the USA and famous guests joined the band. Hagans tells us from the USA:
- My biggest goal was to bring Norrbotten Big Band's music outside Sweden's borders. I enjoyed every moment with the incredible musicians, both on and off stage. As well as getting to meet the smiling, knowledgeable audience. Their appreciation and enthusiasm was truly inspiring. Also producer Mirka Siwek was a key person for many years, without her it would never have become what it was. The whole thing was a magnificent experience.
So now Fahlström and Hagans will once again compose each piece for the band. We dare to promise exciting music at a sky-high level. And if we're really lucky, we also get to enjoy them both as instrumentalists there on stage as well. At least that's the rumor...
Örjan Fahlström is born in the area, vibraphonist and lecturer in composition at the Academy of Music in Stockholm.
Tim Hagans is an American trumpet player with numerous famous collaborations and a high number of Grammy nominations on his CV.

This is what woodwind player Nils Berg is asking himself before the prestigious task of composing for the Norrbotten Big Band in 2024 as Composer in Residence.
- I want it to be a meeting, he continues. A tripartite meeting between me, the band and the Norrbothnian tradition. That we get to draw parallels and play with metaphors. And then watch what happens and what actually comes out the other side.
Nils was born in Gothenburg but has had Stockholm as his base for many years. Cross-genre collaborations glow like a red thread through his career. Along with the place in Håkan Hellström's band, outings together with world artist Fatoumata Diawara, the Cullberg ballet and Nina Persson stand out.

Puccini's melodrama about an unstable diva, a sadistic police chief and an idealistic artist has both offended and captivated audiences for over a century. Critics have taken issue with Tosca's rather sordid subject matter, the intensity of the score, and the crowd-pleasing dramatic leads. But this has also made Tosca one of the few iconic works to represent opera to the public. Tosca's popularity is further enhanced by a refreshing dramatic sweep, a driving score with overflowing melodies and theatrical cleverness, and the strong title role. Tosca premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in 1900.
The magnificent Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen plays the passionate diva in David McVicar's exciting production. British-Italian tenor Freddie De Tommaso makes his highly anticipated Met debut as Tosca's revolutionary lover Cavaradossi. The powerhouse, the American baritone Quinn Kelsey, is the sadistic police chief Scarpia. Maestro Xian Zhang conducts the stirring music, which includes some of Puccini's most memorable melodies.

Norrbotten Big Band is once again collaborating with soul and gospel star Samuel Ljungblahd on the tour The Soul of Christmas in December 2024. They have previously done several acclaimed tours together, most recently in 2021. This time they will also be joined by one of Sweden's most popular and featured singers – Sarah Dawn Finer. Also on the tour is the American soul artist with the big voice from Texas, David Michael Wyatt.
World-class music is on offer, with new songs, classic arrangements and a lot of Christmas atmosphere.
Joakim Milder, artistic director of Norrbotten Big Band, is already longing. - I am very much looking forward to this, it will be a lot of fun. Especially when we get to meet such a large and expectant audience. It feels great to make music with Samuel again and Sarah is brilliant. In addition, it is exciting to bring David Michael Wyatt, it will be very successful, he says.
Sarah Dawn Finer and Samuel Ljungblahd did a similarly successful tour together last year. Now they look forward to being joined on stage by Norrbotten Big Band and David Michael Wyatt.

Few operas have matched Aida in its exploration of the conflict between private feelings and public duty, and perhaps none has been so unanimously acclaimed by both audiences and critics to this day. Aida premiered at the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo in 1871. American soprano Angel Blue stars as the Ethiopian princess torn between love and motherland in a new production of Verdi's Aida by Michael Mayer. It transports audiences into the towering pyramids and gilded tombs of ancient Egypt with intricate projections and dazzling animations. The Romanian-Hungarian mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi plays Aida's rival, Amneris, together with the Polish tenor Piotr Beczała as the soldier Radamès – thus completing the opera's greatest love triangle. Met Principal Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin will take the baton for the Jan. 25 performance, which will be broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera's stage to movie theaters worldwide.

After a five-year hiatus, Henrik Schyffert returned to the standup scene in 2024 with his new tour Schyffert Forever. It was a edgy comeback to stand-up's original form, sprung from the same desire that once upon a time made Henrik take the first steps onto the stages of comedy clubs. Dagens Nyheter wrote international top class, Gefle Dagblad said that the audience (has) never been allowed to get this close to Henrik Schyffert and UNT described Henrik as absolutely brilliant and gave a 5/5 rating. The public success is now being extended with a spring tour in 2025. On April 12, Henrik will come to Acusticum in Piteå!
Somewhat unexpectedly, you can say that the new standup tour Schyffert Forever is coming off thanks to Iggy Pop.
- I hadn't done standup for five years and sat on the train listening to old Iggy Pop - Lust for Life, 1969, The Passenger. Then it struck me that this is how you can also do standup. Just fun and happy and simple. So it will be old school this time! says Henrik Schyffert.
In Schyffert Forever, Henrik tries to figure out why he's so jealous of Bianca Ingrosso, hates first-time parents, and how he became a citizen when he realized you can get ALL the ice cream by yourself! And then there are jokes about, among other things, top hats, Bakelite speakers, girl text messages and the art of lying like a Vassalope skier.
- It's hard to make a simple joke and the simpler the joke, the harder it is, believe it or not. But the kick when you manage to come up with a simple joke that makes the whole room laugh in unison is priceless. And I've really missed trying to get it done again, says Henrik.
Schyffert Forever premiered on January 13, 2024 at the Gävle Concert Hall and has been played in over 40 different cities around Sweden and the neighboring countries of Finland and Norway. At the helm of the Met's first new production of Salome in 20 years, we have Claus Guth, one of Europe's leading opera directors, placing the biblical story in a psychologically astute Victorian setting. This powerful opera derives from a biblical story: a young princess from Judea dances for her stepfather Herod and chooses as a reward the head of the prophet John the Baptist. This theme attracted the imaginations of many artists, but was perhaps best realized in Oscar Wilde's tragedy of 1891. Strauss's score combines the grandeur of Wagner's epic works with the focus and emotional power of the short Italian verismo operas. Salome premiered at the Dresden Court Opera in 1905.
South African soprano Elza van den Heever stars as the unbalanced anti-heroine Salome, with Swedish baritone Peter Mattei as the imprisoned prophet Jochanaan. Rossini's well-honed treasure survived a notoriously disastrous opening night in 1816 to become what is perhaps the world's most popular comic opera. The lively humor and elegant melodies have delighted audiences of every generation for two centuries. Several of opera's most recognizable melodies have become a large part of the opera world. The Barber of Seville premiered at the Teatro Argentina in Rome in 1816. Russian mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina stars as the temperamental heroine Rosina alongside American tenor Jack Swanson as her secret lover Count Almaviva. Moldavian baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky plays Figaro, the genial barber from Seville, with Hungarian bass-baritone Peter Kálmán as Dr. Bartolo.
