Bellini’s final opera is a captivating melodrama and spectacular coloratura. The Met presents a grand new production of I Puritani, the first in nearly 50 years. It will be performed live at Studio Acusticum on January 10, 2026.

I Puritani was the final work of Vincenzo Bellini, the great Sicilian exponent of bel canto opera. Written specifically for four of the greatest singers of the time, the opera’s success depends almost entirely on the singers’ vocal abilities and artistic sensibilities. The opera suggests that the thin veil of reason can be torn at any moment and that madness can plunge a person into a destructive abyss. I Puritani had its world premiere at the Théâtre Italien in Paris in 1835. We see a world-class quartet of stars, conducted by Marco Armiliato, in the demanding leading roles. Soprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo, united by love but torn apart by the political conflicts of the English Civil War; and baritone Artur Ruciski as Riccardo, betrothed to Elvira against her will, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira's sympathetic uncle, Giorgio.
